From the outset, Robert and I have tried to instill a love of the written word in our children. It's one of the things that's important at our house, because we just know it will have lifelong benefits.
One of our frustrations over the years has been finding morally-safe, age-appropriate books at local libraries. We want books that support our values, but we've always had to do a lot of digging before "striking gold".
Some of the books we reject are scary or violent; many contain inappropriate language; some condone bad behaviour; and many of the newer books have strong underlying themes of new age spirituality, eastern mysticism, neopaganism (earth or nature worship) or feminism. We've even discovered that an award seal on the cover is no assurance of what lies within.
So, here's the fruit of our labour. Below are growing lists of books we recommend, sorted by reading or comprehension level. These lists are arranged in alphabetical order (by author), so you can take them to the library or bookstore to speed up the process of selecting books.
Please email us your recommendations and family favourites, so we can add them to the list for everyone's benefit.
Blessings on your storytimes!
Melissa
